Togo - Two international-class airports

The government aims to establish Togo as a key sub-regional air transport hub. Following the construction of the new terminal at Gnassingbé Eyadema International Airport, work is underway to improve the country's second international airport, Niamtougou.

Lomé Airport was ranked the second-best airport for passenger traffic in WAEMU in 2020 by the Association of African Airlines (AFRAA). The performance of Lomé Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport (AIGE) justifies the major reforms undertaken in recent years to make the country a regional hub, through the expansion of reception and cargo capacities, including the construction of a new terminal. Indeed, since its rehabilitation in 2016, Lomé International Airport, built on three levels, with a surface area of 21,000 m² and equipped with 5 telescopic jetways, offers a processing capacity of 2 million passengers per year. The objective is to reach 2.5 million by 2030.

The Lomé Tokoin Airport Company (SALT) has been responsible for the management, operation and development of Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport and Niamtougou International Airport since 1986. SALT is a mixed-economy industrial and commercial company with capital shared between the Togolese State (65%) and the Togolese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (35%).

Niamtougou International Airport was commissioned in 1981 and the terminal inaugurated in January 1997. Its modernization meets a real need of the population and is in line with the logic of regional development hubs. Thanks to the ongoing work, this airport will eventually be able to accommodate large aircraft in optimal conditions of safety and profitability. This will promote the growth of tourism and hospitality in the northern part of Togo. Due to its central geographical location in relation to the main airports in the region (Cotonou, Lomé, Accra, Abidjan, Ouagadougou and Niamey), Niamtougou International Airport can serve as a diversion platform for airlines and will allow the development of new commercial activities such as passenger transport, freight, aircraft maintenance, training of basic or support aviation personnel, etc. From now on, Togo will be able to export its agricultural products from this new base and thus invest in the sector. Furthermore, an aircraft maintenance training centre should be created.

To claim "emerging country" status by 2030, Togo is focusing on many sectors, including air transport. With a growth forecast of 8% according to the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC), Togo is making every effort to comply with international safety and security standards, allowing it to have good indicators (78,84% compliance rate for safety and 85,77% for security) during the latest audits by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and to be among the safest airports on the continent. As a result, Togo has several certifications and approvals, including that of a Category 1 airport from the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
