Togo - Schools connected thanks to the Giga Initiative program

In 2021, Togo prepared to host an international school connectivity program, as part of the global Giga initiative, which aims to connect every school to the internet and every young person to information.

This vision began in July 2018 with the inauguration of the Digital Work Environment (ENT), as part of the integration of ICT in education. The ENT is an educational platform whose objective is to meet the requirements of training/employment matching, launched, from the outset, in eight public technical and vocational high schools and two scientific high schools spread across the country.

Giga – founded by UNICEF and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 2019 – aims to connect every school to the internet by 2030 and every young person to information, opportunities and choices.

This Togolese government project, in conjunction with Giga, aims to bridge the digital divide. Internet access has also been boosted by the requirement to deliver online courses due to Covid-19.

Togo has adopted RETICE, the Energy, Information and Communication Technology in Education Network, presented as a solution designed to bring digital technology to specific structures, such as schools. It allows schools, teachers, and students to communicate through digital commons without an internet connection thanks to an innovation called "80/20."

In other words, 80% communication needs are met by this local network and the needs for interconnections and the Internet represent 20%.
