Agroforestry as a technique is the sustainable and intelligent production of perennial and annual crops in the same area in a healthy environment. In Cameroon, the introduction of agroforestry techniques is yielding positive results in the cocoa sector, producing while preserving forest ecosystems. Tree cultivation in and around cocoa orchards is being developed by the Green Innovation Centers for the Agri-Food Sector (ProCISA), an initiative supported by the German Development Cooperation (GIZ).
All safou trees, mango trees, avocado trees, palm trees and soursop trees planted in the Minkama plantations are systematically pruned at the base to allow the cocoa tree to flourish without fungal pressure. After the first two pilot and test phases (2015-2016 and 2017-2018), the project is currently in the scale-up phase (2019-2024), with a total allocated budget of more than 20 billion FCFA, for a total duration of nine years (2015-2024). This helps diversify producers' incomes, ensure them better living conditions while preserving the environment, for the well-being of present and future generations.

In the town of Nkong Nkeni, 150 km southwest of Yaoundé, an educational farm will be established. The pilot planting of 14,000 trees is planned on a 12-hectare plot of land provided by a private donor. This research environment on cocoa excellence will constitute a unique training site for all members of the cooperatives affiliated with the "Committed Chocolatiers" initiative, who will be taught best practices in endemic cocoa varieties; cocoa-growing techniques; agroforestry management; and the recovery of plant waste.
Agroforestry is a climate resilience solution that is effective in eliminating hunger and reducing poverty while restoring the land and the environment.
