Most of the goods arriving or departing from the country use this infrastructure. This corridor offers the country an exceptional asset. It represents one of the best opportunities to diversify an economy still focused on oil exploitation.

However, the dilapidated state of the railway infrastructure is a cause for concern: out of a total fleet of 43 line locomotives owned by CFCO, the company operating the railway network, only 12 are in service. CFCO's activities are limited to the transport of small volumes of goods. Four Belgian-made locomotives were delivered to CFCO in January 2023. The acquired locomotives represent the beginning of a recovery in the company's activities. They will be used to haul passenger trains or medium-tonnage services for the transport of fuel, cement, or other essential goods. Passenger traffic between Pointe-Noire and Brazzaville resumed on April 27, 2023.

With several hundred million tons, the Mbalam (Cameroon) and Nabeba (Congo) iron ore deposits are a major asset in the development of the mining sectors of both countries. Cameroon and the Republic of Congo have therefore decided to increase the length of the railway to be used to transport iron ore from the Mbalam-Nabeba project shared by both countries. Named Nabeba-Mbalam-Kribi, this railway line will now be 610 km long, compared to 540 km previously. The infrastructure will be developed in 2023 in both countries by Bestway Finance. The Mbalam-Nabeba project hosts mineral resources of approximately 800 million tons and can be exploited over several decades.

Congo is considering the construction of a railway line to serve the north and south to facilitate the export of mining and hydrocarbon products. The 1,000-km-long railway, linking the Sangha department to Pointe-Noire, the emerging mineral port, is expected to require an investment of $10 billion.

Five challenges will be addressed, including the rehabilitation of the railway, engineering structures, and station buildings located along the railway network. The ministry will also have to ensure the repair of the long tunnel, the reinforcement of rolling stock, the construction of a rolling stock maintenance workshop in Brazzaville, and the reopening of railway training schools.
