Gabon – The gas strategy for producing electricity

62915619_6ab22ff838_o

Gabon has proven natural gas reserves of approximately 28.3 billion cubic meters, primarily in the form of associated gas. Currently making limited use of this gas, Gabon is seeking ways to further exploit this resource.

One of the goals of the energy transition is to recover flare gas and use a resource intended to be completely burned. During oil production, there is gas and water inside. The water is currently treated and returned to nature, while the gas is burned. Gabon aims to optimize the use of natural gas in Gabon, in order to be able to produce electricity with this flared gas. In fact, this transition will transform the way oil fields are operated and capture butane gas from oil fields, in order to be able to produce it in quantity and no longer have to import it, which will reduce the cost of butane gas. Currently, Gabon imports approximately 90% of the butane gas consumed in households.

35 billion cubic feet of gas represents roughly 200 megawatts of electricity in terms of energy. In Port-Gentil, 100% of the electricity that powers the city is produced from gas from oil fields, which was previously intended for flaring. In Libreville, the goal is to achieve 60% of the electricity needed to come from flared gas by 2023.
