For now, the system is operational, but tests are also underway with ARTEC for 5G operation on the 5G n78 frequency band. Telma, a member of the Axian group, launched the system in partnership with Ericsson. The Malagasy operator promises to activate its commercial network in other provinces once the Covid-19 health crisis has subsided. 5G allows for improved bandwidth, reduced latency, availability, battery life, and increased uptime, thus increasing profitability.

However, the Communication Technologies Regulatory Authority (ARTEC) issued a press release stating that the use of 5G services is still in an experimental phase in Madagascar, as in many member countries of the International Telecommunications Union; and that in order to comply with the regulations in force, this licensed operator has received temporary authorization for this purpose.

ARTEC also recalls that in carrying out its regulatory mission, it supports research activities and collaborates in promoting investments in the telecommunications and digital sectors.

Wi-Fi hotspots in every region of the country

The Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Digital Development will deploy free Wi-Fi hotspots across the country, an investment driven by a desire to improve access to web services for the poorest.

Free internet access will soon be available in the busiest locations in each of the country's 22 regions. A total of 55 Wi-Fi hotspots are expected to be installed in public places across the country. Currently, two access points are already operational in the tourist town of Nosy Be. The goal is to allow as many citizens as possible to benefit from the new technology.
