Agriculture remains the engine of the Togolese economy, contributing 23.51 TFP of the gross domestic product (GDP) and providing employment to more than 601 TFP of the active population.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Although Togo's agro-ecological conditions allow for the cultivation of most food products, the agricultural sector holds enormous untapped potential.<\/p>\n

Togo aims for strong and inclusive growth (7.61 TPH by 2025) resulting from the structural transformation of its economy. This growth will be deliberately geared towards sustainable and inclusive development, based in particular on a dynamic of agricultural modernization, an industrial vision adapted to national realities, combined with a strategy of economic diversification and the creation of decent jobs, thereby contributing significantly to reducing poverty and inequality, and expanding access to basic social services. <\/p>\n

Over the next few years, the government will focus on developing an agricultural processing hub using a "value chain" approach and targeting productivity to achieve food security, balance of agricultural trade and the creation of agricultural jobs. <\/p>\n

To achieve this, with the support of the private sector and development partners, the government will dedicate more resources to the agricultural sector through innovative and tailored financing mechanisms. These resources will be used primarily to modernize agriculture, particularly to improve yields through the development of appropriate mechanization, water management, and the strengthening of cooperatives linked to the processing sector. Above all, they will be used to upgrade the research center (notably the Togolese Institute of Agronomic Research) and agricultural training centers. They will also contribute to establishing agro-industrial parks around high value-added sectors and to stimulating the creation of major processing plants for each targeted high value-added sector.<\/p>

The 2021-2022 agricultural season is opening in Togo with greater confidence than the previous one, which was disrupted by the pandemic. To support the commitment of producers and processors, the government is allocating several billion CFA francs to agriculture and the agri-food sector in its 2022 budget. Government support focuses, among other things, on the availability of arable land, fertilizers, and the promotion of livestock production.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the 2021-2022 agricultural season, the Ministry of Agriculture plans to establish 80 new Planned Agricultural Development Zones (ZAAPs) in each of Togo's five regions, in addition to the 38 already in existence. The project is included in the five-year roadmap. The goal is to reach 400 ZAAPs across the country's five regions by 2025. A total of 8,000 hectares, at a rate of 100 hectares per site, will be developed; 24 are planned for the Savanes region, 24 for the Kara region, 5 for the Central region, 11 for the Plateaux region, and 16 for the Maritime region. Work has already begun, with land identification from local communities, topographic surveys, and the organization of farmers.<\/p>\n

The establishment of these sites, initiated a few years ago and included in the government's priorities for the sector, should make it possible to offer cooperative frameworks to farmers, improve productivity, boost yields and modernize national agriculture.<\/p>\n

Activities on these ZAAPs will enable the establishment of agricultural product processing units, and the State will do everything possible to support producers in the search for markets according to the Agricultural Financing Mechanism (MIFA).\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The performance of Togolese organic products\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n
The Togolese organic sector has experienced spectacular growth in recent years. This progress in the organic sector has allowed Togo to become the leading West African exporter of organic products to Europe. It ranks ahead of Ghana and C\u00f4te d'Ivoire, according to European figures. The volume of organic product exports to the European Union more than doubled between 2018 and 2019, rising from 22,000 to 45,000 tons, an increase of 102,130 tons in a single year. Globally, the country has climbed from 31st to 14th place, even surpassing China and India. The top spot goes to soybean exports: 42,300 tons in 2019 compared to 19,700 tons in 2018.\u00a0<\/div>\n
In Togo, the organic farming sector employs just over 37,000 people. The most exported organic products are soybeans and pineapples. Nearly 40,000 hectares are dedicated to pineapple production.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
