The construction and management of the airport have been entrusted to the Singaporean multinational OLAM, through its local subsidiary GSEZ Airport Construction. Spanning an initial area of 915 hectares, the future airport will feature a 3,500-meter runway, a presidential terminal, a control tower, and a 3,300 m\u00b2 passenger terminal. It aims to handle 2.25 million passengers by 2030. To better manage its growing passenger flow, a bypass road around the new airport will alleviate congestion in the Libreville-Akanda area.

The current L\u00e9on Mba International Airport is named after the first president of the Republic of Gabon, who governed from 1961 to 1967. Since its construction in the 1950s, Libreville Airport has continuously expanded and modernized its infrastructure to accommodate all types of aircraft as they have evolved. Twenty destinations are served by 15 airlines offering regular flights from this airport. Two terminals facilitate passenger flow. Terminal 1 is the main terminal of L\u00e9on Mba Airport, handling both domestic and international flights. Spanning 16,000 square meters, it can accommodate up to 1.2 million passengers per year.<\/p>\n

Terminal 2 is reserved for regional and domestic flights operated by Afrijet. In May 2022, L\u00e9on-Mba International Airport became the first airport in Central Africa to be certified by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for the quality and safety of its airport infrastructure.

It should be noted that Gabon has adopted the biometric passport of the Economic Community of Central African States (CEMAC). <\/p>\n

THE REHABILITATION OF 10 PROVINCIAL AIRPORTS

<\/b>\u00a0In its quest for economic diversification and performance, Gabon aims to leverage air transport to improve the efficiency of people and goods movement. The Gabonese government plans to rehabilitate the country's 10 provincial airports, including those in Lambar\u00e9n\u00e9, Koula-Moutou, Tchibanga, Oyem, Bitam, Franceville, Port-Gentil, Makokou, and Omboue.
Port-Gentil airport had already been renovated in 2011. Financed by the oil company Total Gabon, the work cost 73 billion FCFA. The work consisted of the construction of a new 9,000 m\u00b2 passenger terminal and a 1,000 m\u00b2 presidential pavilion, as well as the extension and renovation of the runway, taxiways and aircraft parking areas.<\/p>\n
